Overall, 65 percent said they are commonly exposed to ageist messages in materials they watch or read, and 45 percent said they "sometimes" or "often" experience ageism in interactions with others. Over one-third have internalized stereotypes to the degree that they "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that loneliness or depression were inherent parts of aging. Older and lower-income older adults were more likely to report that they commonly endured three or more forms of everyday ageism. Meanwhile, women, retirees, and those who lived in rural areas also were more likely than men to experience it, as well as those still employed and living in suburban or urban areas. Nevertheless, the survey implied that most older adults are still positive about aging — including 88 percent who said they are more comfortable being themselves, 80 percent who have a strong sense of purpose, and 66 percent who feel that life over 50 is better than they expected it to be. The researchers hope that the poll's conclusions will inform efforts to address assumptions about older adults' thoughts and experiences and any ageism that may arise due to the coronavirus pandemic.
