The band has been roving around metropolitan Miami since June, staging socially distanced concerts for low-income seniors. "We are coming together to show them they are loved, and we are here for them," says band leader Marisel Lopez. Algo Nuevo was formed in 1994, and Lopez converted it into a nonprofit in 2003 to offer musical therapy to the aging populace, with the goal of keeping Latin folklore alive. This was done by coordinating with communities across South Florida to take older adults to their events to enjoy free live shows. With the virus forcing many older residents to stay home, Lopez rounded up Algo Nuevo and started holding outdoor performances throughout Miami's heavily populated senior communities. "If we can spread some joy and love on each other, we can get through these ugly times together," she says.
