The group suggests that those whose family member lives in a residential community should check the community's emergency plans, and ensure they account for specific needs like an oxygen tank or medications. For example, the Juniper House assisted living and memory care community in Pendleton, Ore., maintains contacts for backup housing for residents at all times in the event of an emergency. In such a scenario, staff contact each resident's family by phone to update and alert them about where their loved one is being relocated to. At least a week's worth of food and other supplies are stocked in case residents have to shelter in place or supplies are blocked. Meanwhile, those who care for loved ones with dementia at home should be similarly prepared. The Alzheimer's Association suggests people add copies of important documents, like legal papers about guardianship and insurance information, to a grab-and-go emergency package. The package also should have feature medications, a list of needed drugs, dosage information, and a physician's name and contact information. The association further recommends that loved ones have identifying information and a picture of the person on them should they need to search for them.
