Researchers associated the drug with an elevated risk of hip fracture compared to other medications in more than 140,000 subjects. "Our results point to the need to consider tramadol's associated risk of fracture in clinical practice and treatment guidelines," emphasized Guanghua Lei at Central South University's Xiangya Hospital. The study group was divided among five cohorts, with analysis showing the risk of hip fracture was higher for tramadol use than in any of the other cohorts. Risk of hip fracture was higher in the tramadol cohort compared to naproxen, ibuprofen, celecoxib, etoricoxib, and codeine. The implication is that the risk of hip fracture could be linked to certain side effects of tramadol use — like seizures, dizziness, or delirium — observed in other studies that could exacerbate a risk of falls.
